Martin R. Wellens uses the argument that well, it's not raining at his house so it must not be raining anywhere in Minnesota in his assinine letter to the editor of the Star Tribune. The opening of a new third lane on west-bound 494 in Bloomington has reduced his commute by 10 minutes. So therefore building more lanes must be the only solution to congestion. Wait a couple years; that new third lane will fill up. Or ask how much it cost, including the always externalized costs that are conveniently ignored by idiots like Wellens. Only a complete moron would honestly believe that we are both able to and can afford to build more highway lanes everywhere there is congestion. A moron like Wellens.

  4. Ola, Ola,
    Such anger, hatred and name-calling.
You need to relax and accept that the American people have chosen the automobile as their preferred method of transportion. No amount of rigid railroads or bike trails are going to reverse it. I hope you can end your war against the people and move on with your own life.
    Your pal,
    Martin Wellens

  5. I'm actually a car guy. I've owned extra, fun cars, usually sports cars for decades. I love to drive. And I know lots of other people who do, too. Americans have "chosen" the automobile, thanks to massive influence of corporations and government. It's history; it's water under the bridge. It's fine with me. But ignorant, fly in the face of the laws of nature, physics and economics letters like yours to the editor are not going to solve our crumbling infrastructure, are not going to reduce our congested highways, are not going to clean our air, preserve our environment, or allow our children and grandchildren to live any kind of pleasant life.

  6. Ola,
You took a few of my carefully worded comments and twisted them to the extreme.

I did not write: more lanes must be the ONLY solution to congestion. You wrote that.
I did not claim a new third lane would not fill up... as you implied.

You wrote: "Only a complete moron would honestly believe that we are both able to and can afford to build more highway lanes..."

But adding highway lanes are the MOST efficient and effective way of alleviating traffic in most places. For the money they move far more people per dollar than bike-paths, buses, trains, metered-ramps, yellow-bikes, and any other scam that is subsidized by the gas tax.

So what are you suggesting to solve traffic congestion?
